Honored for Her Commitment to STEM
Marymount is proud to announce that Alexandra S. '21 has been selected as a 2020 National Honorable Mention for the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing! Recipients are chosen for their demonstrated interest and achievement in computing, proven leadership ability, academic performance, and plans for post-secondary education.
In summer 2019, Alexandra founded a non-profit called NYCxSTEM to bring STEM to girls in underserved public middle schools. With support from Marymount, Alexandra raised enough funds to supply laptops and littleBits kits for twenty-four students in the Beacon Program at P.S. 198 in East Harlem. Each week, she and four other Class XI students (Isabella A., Grace C., Mia Q., and Camilla T.) engage the students through a littleBits curriculum that offers hands-on instruction in coding and computer science. “There is a huge dropoff in interest in STEM in fourth and fifth graders,” Alexandra explains. “I hope that offering these middle schoolers access to such great resources now will help sustain their love for the subject into high school and beyond!”
Congratulations to Alexandra on this remarkable program that was inspired by her love of coding and commitment to social justice!
