Growing Ideas in Lower School Science

Lower School Science Teacher Margaret McCarthy participated in STEMteacherNYC’s Kid Talk, Teacher Talk Project this summer. In this two-week program, K-III STEM teachers from around the globe learned strategies for facilitating discussions that allow students to use claim, evidence, and reasoning to explain the science behind their learning. Using open-ended prompts and projects, teachers are able to coach their students through a conversation toward a content goal. “This program really transformed my approach to teaching,” Mrs. McCarthy said. “I am focused now on fostering in my students the skills a scientist ought to have: how to design an experiment, work collaboratively, change models based on new data, and communicate ideas effectively. Students take real ownership of their learning and are driving our class discussions. In my lab, we are not drawing conclusions, but growing ideas.”
