To ensure we fulfill the RSHM mission “that all may have life, and have it to the full,” Marymount is committed to building a culture of inclusion and belonging so that all members of our community feel seen, supported, and valued. Through ongoing training and conversation, the School helps students and staff examine and address unconscious biases, build cultural competency, speak out in the face of prejudice or hate, and work together to bring about social and racial justice. As an anti-racist community, Marymount expects all constituents to respect each other in words and actions and to uphold community norms and expectations.

Curriculum

Marymount strives to amplify diverse voices and perspectives throughout the curriculum in order to ensure full representation of people in marginalized groups. Every year, we make curricular choices that allow students to explore topics of identity and community, to engage in respectful and well-informed dialogue, and to approach complex ideas with open minds and open hearts. Students learn to think critically about the world around them, while also developing the empathy and understanding needed to become forces for justice and agents of change.

Community Engagement & Support

Marymount HarambeeMarymount offers robust programming that celebrates the rich diversity of our community. We host annual heritage events that showcase the unique experiences and traditions of our students, staff, parents, and alumnae.

These include:

  • Latinx Heritage Celebration: an event in October that showcases Latinx culture, food, artists, and dance
  • Harambee: a student-led celebration of African, Caribbean, and African-American culture and pride during Black History Month in February
  • AAPI Heritage Event: a celebration of Asian and Asian-American heritage in May
  • LGBTQ+ Visibility & Allyship Week: highlights the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community and empowers allies against bullying, harassment, or discrimination

Students and staff are also invited to participate in affinity groups: intentional gatherings of people who share a similar identity. These groups are places of reflection, dialogue, and support – safe spaces where students can process their emotions, develop a stronger sense of self, and build a common language to address issues of race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender diversity. Affinity groups include:

  • Ohana (K-V)
  • Asian Affinity Group (VI-VIII, IX-XII, Staff)
  • Marymount Black Affinity Group (VI-VIII, IX-XII, Staff)
  • Latinx Affinity Group (VI-VIII, IX-XII, Staff)
  • Multirarical Affinity Student Hub (IX-XII)
  • Anti-Racist White Affinity Space (IX-XII, Staff)
  • PRISM (VI-VIII, IX-XII, Staff)
