After developing a passion for reading and writing at Marymount, Mia Alvar '96 pursued degrees from Harvard and Columbia to prepare her for a career as a writer. Mia's collection of short stories, In the Country, won the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction, the University of Rochester’s Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize, and the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Award. She has also been a writer in residence at the Corporation of Yaddo, the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and the Blue Mountain Center for the Arts.
