Class II deepened their study of the Lenape people and the early history of New York by visiting Waterloo Village today! Students made connections to the past by playing traditional games, exploring woodland resources, and recreating a day in the life of the Lenape.
Marymount was happy to partner with @communitybots this week for a panel discussion that explored STEM in middle and high school, as well as college and career pathways. Panelists from various disciplines, including #mmtalumna @doctornance, shared their personal journeys and offered practical guidance for those interested in pursuing opportunities in STEM in college and beyond.
The future of AI needs student voices! 3 Marymount students were featured at the Global Youth Conference, sharing how they’re working with AI, from creating AI-powered apps that solve real-world problems to serving on our Student AI Working Group. By putting creativity, responsibility, and human-centered thinking at the heart of AI, they’re showing what it means to move beyond simply using technology to actively shaping its future. 🪔✨ A celebration of light, culture, and community! Our Lower Mid students learned about Diwali, the Festival of Lights, and explored the vibrant traditions of India through music and dance. They even got to try traditional Garba and Dandiya Raas dances from Gujarat! 💃🌟
What a beautiful evening celebrating Latinx culture, identity, and community! ❤️🌎 This year’s theme, “From Here and There” — “De Aquí y de Allá,” reminded us that we carry our roots and traditions wherever we go. Through delicious food, music, vibrant student performances, and heartfelt reflections, we celebrated the stories and connections that bring us together.
Class VI students enjoyed spectacular weather for the annual overnight to Princeton-Blairstown Center where they participated in team challenges, went on guided hikes, and tested their climbing skills on a variety of challenge course elements. 💙💙

As we wrap up Latinx Heritage Month, we are celebrating Class VI’s vibrant Mexican folk art project. For the past decade, students have transformed tin squares into colorful works of art featuring Latin-inspired motifs, bringing them together in a tapestry for Marymount’s Latinx Heritage Celebration. We hope to see you tomorrow night for this beloved tradition that shines year after year!

Classes II-V welcomed London-based art historian, curator, and bestselling author Katy Hessel, who shared stories from her new children’s book, The Story of Art Without Men. Students discovered remarkable women artists from around the world and across centuries, exploring the many ways they used art to tell stories, challenge conventions, and change the world! 💙🖼️
Yesterday, Class IX students were invited to step beyond the classroom, learn from the community around them, and consider the ways we can contribute to the well-being of others. They explored Seneca Village in Central Park, discovering the history of a once-thriving African American community and the people who helped shape New York City. A wonderful opportunity to connect with our city’s past while reflecting on our responsibility to the community around us! 🙏💙
Upper Middle School students teamed up with students from @stbernardsnyc for their first math meet of the year, tackling fun problem-solving challenges and putting their teamwork (and math skills!) to the test! The team beat the Dunn School in California that day 14-10 🙌💪🧠
🍁🍂 Fall fun on the farm for our little Lions! Kindergarten headed to Dr. Davies Farm last Thursday for a day of apple and pumpkin picking and fun fall adventures 🍎🍏🎃
On Tuesday, Class VII students participated in the first step of the Hudson Data Jam by collecting data from the Hudson River. Students measured the chemistry of the river, conducted experiments to monitor oxygen and pH levels, and measured the tides and currents for the day. This multi-month project will culminate in small group presentations and the potential to win recognition in a statewide competition. 🧪🧫💧
Lower Mid students in Marymount’s new Fashion at the Met after-school club headed to the museum for inspiration, exploring the Costume Art collection and Greek and Roman galleries before dreaming up their own flower garlands, toga-inspired looks, and accessories. 🌸✨

From the art studio to the museum galleries! 🎨 🖼️ Class I students have been exploring lines, shapes, and color through watercolor as they study the work of Vasily Kandinsky. This week at The Met, they came face-to-face with his Improvisation 27 (Garden of Love II), sharing observations, sketching, and taking in the artwork while listening to music by Arnold Schoenberg, a composer Kandinsky admired. 🎵
Class V brought their study of Lois Lowry’s novel Number the Stars to life with a visit to the Museum of Jewish Heritage last week. Through the exhibit “Courage to Act: Rescue in Denmark”, students explored the remarkable story of how ordinary people came together to protect their Jewish neighbors. A meaningful day of learning about courage, community, and what it means to be an upstander!

Emily Schottland is thrilled to be joining the Marymount community this fall as a learning specialist for Classes II and III during Ms. Maccabee’s family leave. An educator for twenty years, she has worked as a classroom teacher and literacy specialist across the elementary grades in New York City public and independent schools, as well as an Adjunct Professor at Bank Street Graduate School of Education. Ms. Schottland loves to connect to the strengths and potential in all people – children and adults alike – and is grateful that her work is grounded in this connection. A former dancer 💃 and choreographer, she now dons boxing gloves 🥊 and joyfully steps into the ring whenever she can. A warm welcome to Ms. Schottland! 💙💙

Meet Sarabeth Buckley, the new Independent Science Research teacher in the Upper School! Dr. Buckley earned her undergraduate degree from Tufts University and her PhD in Earth Sciences and Synthetic Biology from Boston University while working in a lab at Harvard Medical School. She then conducted a postdoc at Cambridge University in the UK, studying mycelium as an NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Dr. Buckley went on to work at Oxman, developing and validating ecosystem design systems, novel scientific instruments, and the impact of biodegradable plastics on the environment. She is thrilled to bring this experience to Marymount to help students find the areas they are passionate about studying and then craft these interests into research projects. In her free time, she enjoys ballroom dancing 💃 running 🏃♀️ and writing poetry ✍️ A warm welcome to Dr. Buckley! 💙💙
Meet Rachel Kuenzler, a new PE teacher in the Lower School! Originally from Long Island, Ms. Kuenzler graduated from Adelphi University in 2022. A former Division I All-American swimmer 🏊♀️ who also played Division I beach volleyball 🏐, she turned her love of sports into a career teaching physical education. Ms. Kuenzler is passionate about helping kids build confidence, stay active, and discover their own love of movement along the way. She wants to show students what they’re capable of and create a positive relationship with movement that extends far beyond the gym. When she’s not at school, you can find her near the ocean 🌊 working out, trying new food 🍱 or spending time with the people she loves. A warm welcome to Ms. Kuenzler! 💙💙

Russell Bollag-Miller joins Marymount as a new Upper School English teacher who will be teaching Classes X-XII this year. A longtime New Englander, he joins Marymount from Beaver Country Day School in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, and holds degrees from Skidmore College, Harvard, and Middlebury’s Bread Loaf School of English. This past summer, Mr. Bollag-Miller backpacked 240 miles of the Colorado Trail before relocating to New York. Outside the classroom, he can usually be found planning his next outdoor adventure or honing his woodworking and sewing skills. Mr Bollag-Miller is thrilled to be joining the Marymount community and excited for all that this year will bring. A warm welcome to Mr. Bollag-Miller! 💙💙
The Class of 2030 headed to Frost Valley for an overnight retreat filled with team challenges, new friendships, and plenty of fun! The freshmen returned to campus with strong connections that will carry them through their Marymount journey.
Kate FitzGerald, Marymount’s new N-II Spanish teacher, is originally from Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. This will be her fifteenth year teaching, including seven years teaching Spanish, as well as time spent teaching art and homeroom. She holds master’s degrees in Childhood Education from Bank Street College and Spanish from Middlebury College, and has lived in both Argentina 🇦🇷 and Spain 🇪🇸 Mrs. FitzGerald believes that theater 🎭 music 🎵 and play are powerful and developmentally appropriate tools for second-language acquisition. In her free time, she enjoys reading, learning other languages, biking 🚲 yoga, and hiking 🥾 A warm welcome to Mrs. FitzGerald! 💙💙
Gaby Sabogal joins Marymount as an associate teacher in Class IA! Before starting at Marymount, she worked as an assistant teacher at Ladybird Montessori and Harriet Tubman Learning Center. Ms. Sabogal recently obtained her MFA at Columbia University, where she studied Fiction and received the Felipe de Alba Fellowship. As the new Athletics Coordinator, Ryan Henry joins Marymount with a diverse background in college athletics and coaching. A former professional softball 🥎 player, Ms. Henry most recently served as the Assistant Softball Coach at Long Island University (NCAA D1), where she supported student athletes on and off the field. She also hold’s a master’s degree in Theatre Arts from Villanova University. Joanna Turck joins the Lower School as the new associate teacher in Nursery! Originally from Garden City, she graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Early Childhood Education. Before joining Marymount, Ms. Turck spent a year teaching first grade. In her free time, she enjoys reading 📖 cooking 🧑🍳 and taking classes at Pure Barre. 💪 Ms. Turck is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to teach at Marymount and is looking forward to joining the community. Garrett Bassin-Birkhoff is a new math teacher in the Upper School, where he will be teaching Geometry and AB Calculus. An NYC native, he studied math at Harvard University and brings seven years experience teaching the subject to high schoolers at every level from Algebra 1 up through Calculus. When not in the classroom, he can usually be found walking in the park 🌳 with his wife, Dina, and their dog, Olive 🐶 Mr. Bassin-Birkhoff is delighted to be a part of the Marymount community and is excited to see what the new year brings. Meet Katie Reichenbach, the new head teacher in Pre-KA! Originally from the Chicago area, Ms. Reichenbach earned her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University and her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from National Louis University. She began her teaching career in Chicago before moving to New York City and brings over eight years of experience in early childhood and elementary education. Ms. Reichenbach is passionate about creating a joyful, inclusive classroom where young learners feel known, supported, and excited to learn. Outside of the classroom, Ms. Reichenbach enjoys yoga 🧘 and pilates, reading with her book club 📚 and exploring New York City’s museums 🖼️ and neighborhoods. Ali Slavin joins Marymount as an Upper Middle School Learning Specialist, working with students in Classes VI-VIII. She comes to Marymount from Winston Preparatory School, where she spent twelve years supporting students with language-based learning differences and executive functioning profiles as a Focus Teacher, Testing Coordinator, and College Board SSD Coordinator. Ms. Slavin holds an M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Teachers College, Columbia University, and she is a licensed speech-language pathologist. Outside of school, she is a new-ish mom to her one-year-old daughter, Sloane, and she enjoys taking Pilates, reading 📚 and needlepointing 🪡 Ms. Slavin is looking forward to getting to know the Upper Middle School students and their families as they grow into their potential this year. Meet Amanda Volk, a new associate teacher in Class IB. Originally from Long Island, Ms. Volk earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Lehigh University and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Education in Childhood Education at Hunter College. Before coming to Marymount, she spent five summers at Camp Echo Lake, where she served as a Camper Specialist, Group Leader, and Head Counselor, working with children ages 10–16, where she found joy in helping children build confidence, friendships, and lifelong memories. Meet Serena Strecker Rolock, a new history teacher in the Upper School, where she will be teaching Classes X-XI. Originally from Missouri, Dr. Strecker Rolock completed her bachelor‘s in Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities at the University of Chicago and her Ph.D. in History at Yale University. While at Yale, she discovered a love for teaching students how to think like historians. She has taught subjects ranging from the Catholic intellectual tradition to food history and the history of climate science. Meet Cate Pfau, a new associate teacher in Kindergarten-B! Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, Ms. Pfau graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 2025 with degrees in Political Science and Peace and Conflict Studies, and a minor in Education. This past year, she taught high school English in a rural town in the Czech Republic 🇨🇿 through the Fulbright Program. She loves creating meaningful classroom experiences and is excited to continue teaching at Marymount! Meet Sophia Ramos, a new Spanish teacher in the Lower Middle School. Originally from Puerto Rico, Ms. Ramos recently moved to New York after several years living and teaching in Colombia 🇨🇴 She has been teaching since 2018 and has experience working with students of all ages in both English and Spanish language classrooms. She loves traveling ✈️ learning about different cultures, and spending time with her dog, Matcha 🐶. Before joining the #marymountny community, Mr. Cook served as an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow with the U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C., where he partnered with scientists and educators to develop hands-on science experiences for classrooms across the country 🥼🧪 A chemistry teacher at heart, he is passionate about helping students build confidence by asking thoughtful questions, designing investigations, collaborating with others, and discovering how the world around them works. His passion for curiosity extends beyond the classroom through educational videos 🎥that he writes and produces that reveal the surprising science hidden in everyday objects, historical inventions, and the world around us. This June, students in rising Classes IX-XI spent a week immersed in the art, history, and culture of France 🇫🇷 exploring Paris, Arles, and Avignon as centers of creative inspiration. Following in the footsteps of renowned artists, they visited world-class museums 🖼️ admired the newly restored Notre-Dame Cathedral ✝️ wandered the historic streets of Arles, and experienced some of France’s most iconic landmarks. Throughout the journey, students engaged in thoughtful discussions about the ways art and culture reflect society and continue to shape our understanding of the world.

Meet Victoria Mussalli ‘14, Marymount’s new Director of Alumnae Affairs and Development Operations! She’s thrilled to rejoin the Marymount community on the Development team and is looking forward to connecting with alumnae and current families in the months ahead. Prior to Marymount, Victoria worked in private equity for 8 years, building operations across cybersecurity, compliance, and HR functions. Congratulations to Rosalee, Ava G., Kay Rose, and Allyson on winning $5000 for Hidden Water which supports victims of child abuse; Airlie, Victoria, and Ava Y. on winning $2500 for RaisingHealth Partners which supports local immigrant communities; and Isabella, Evelyn, Ruby, and Lucy on winning $1500 for American Indian Community House which supports Indigenous youth’s access in NYC 👏💙👏 Proud of all our Class X students for striving for social justice and putting faith into action!

Working in teams, Class V students designed their own products, developed sales pitches, and brought their entrepreneurial ideas to life at the recent Lion’s Den! After hearing from a panel of business leaders and entrepreneurs, students pitched their products to these potential “investors” and sold them to eager Class IV shoppers armed with 5 “Begly bucks.” An impressive display of imagination and innovation from our young entrepreneurs! 👏🦁💪

Every season, coaches in the AAIS league vote for the two players on each school’s varsity team who exhibit tremendous skill and heart. These AAIS All Stars should be commended for their talent, teamwork, and lion pride 🦁💙 Congrats!
In its inaugural year, the Independent History Research Program was a great success! Class XII students in the program chose a topic of interest in American history, utilized the vast resources of the Gilder Lehrman Institute to conduct research, and presented their findings in a capstone showcase in May. Topics included an examination of the CIA in the early Cold War, the history of media polarization, and an exploration of the Supreme Court and the limits of executive power.

Class XII students just returned from Senior Retreat, a special overnight trip where they reflected on how they’ve grown individually and collectively over the last four years as they prepare to start their next chapters. The start of an amazing final week for @mmt2eni6rs! 💖💙
Aligning with their genetics unit in science, Class V visited the DNA Learning Center for two laboratory experiences! First, they viewed various hair and fur samples under a compound microscope to determine the origins of Ötzi the Iceman’s clothing. Then, they had the opportunity to extract DNA from wheat germ and bring it home in a keepsake necklace. 🧬🔬🥼
In May, the Upper School club Young Women Big Impact held a drive to collect items for Children of Bellevue. YWBI members packed Comfort Kit bags of donated items last week for distribution to children in the hospital. Congratulations to Lucy L. ‘29 on being part of the team that won the Marine Biodiversity Innovation Challenge sponsored by Empire Wind and hosted by the Junior Academy, a global scientific organization that connects students with researchers, scientists, and STEM leaders around the world! 👏💪🥇 She worked alongside fellow New York City students and an international mentor and developed “BioTurbine Collective (Marine Life Sustaining Wind Farms),” an innovative proposal that transforms offshore wind turbines into reef-like ecosystems designed to protect and restore marine biodiversity while supporting renewable energy development. Their project was selected as the winning solution and featured by the New York Academy of Sciences for its scientific research, sustainability focus, and real-world environmental impact 🌎💨🏆

Congratulations to Sahana S.’26 and the 4 x 100 relay team on a record-breaking day at the NYSAIS Championships at Icahn Stadium! Sahana ended her outstanding track & field career by breaking her own school record in the 200m with a time of 26.44. Later in the meet, the 4 x 100 relay team of Avery C.’29, Winnie N.’26, Sahana S.’26, and Julia M.’26 delivered a school record-breaking performance, running 50.71 to surpass the previous school record of 51.11 set in 2024. 👏💪🦁

Lights, camera, acción! 🎬🇪🇸🇫🇷 Students in both the Advanced French and the Advanced Spanish Language, Culture and Cinema classes have spent the year immersed in a project-based learning experience, creating original short films entirely in the target language. From screenplay writing and storyboarding to directing, acting, cinematography, sound, and editing, students take on every role of a real production company while developing advanced language skills and exploring literature and film through the eyes of a filmmaker. The experience culminates in a final film screening, panel presentation, and audience Q&A. 🌟🎥

🚨 Hot off the press! 🚨 The Muse, Marymount’s Upper School literary arts magazine, has just published its centennial issue! The editors have worked so hard all year to put the magazine together, and they are so excited to share the wonderful poetry, prose, artwork, and photography that this issue contains. This year’s theme is inspired by the nine Muses, goddesses from Ancient Greek mythology that were the sources of inspiration for all of the arts and of knowledge. After wowing us with her talent at International Night, Eleanor T. ’32 won first place at the 2026 Prima Volta Music International Competition and has been invited to perform solo at the Winner’s Recital at Carnegie Hall in June! 🎻🎶 She also just recently won second prize at the VIVO competition and performed at the Winner’s Concert at Merkin Hall last week. Big congratulations to our star violinist! 🤩👏💙
Students in the Independent Science Research program presented the findings from their research projects at the 2026 Science Symposium last week! In this 2-3 year program, students choose a topic of interest, conduct original research, analyze the data, and share their work at this capstone symposium each year. Congratulations to all of our ISR students on their hard work! 👏💙
At the end of April, Class VII students traveled to Boston as the culmination of their study of American history, visiting museums and important landmarks as part of their exploration of the city! 🇺🇸

Dr. Jawad Saleh (Chief Pharmacy Officer and AVP of Clinical Operations at HSS) spoke with the inaugural Pharmacology and Drug Discovery class last Friday 🥼👩🔬💊 He shared stories about his journey to becoming a pharmacist as well as the FDA approval process. He highlighted the need to give back to our communities, always keep learning, and encouraged students to persevere in the face of adversity. 💪
This March, the Class IX Humanities curriculum came to life in Greece 🇬🇷 Sixteen students and three faculty chaperones explored sites connected to The Odyssey—from the Acropolis and Ancient Agora to Odysseus’s Palace in Ithaca—while taking part in cooking classes 👩🍳archaeological site visits 🏛️ and having a conversation with a leading Odyssey scholar 📖 Experiencing these places firsthand brought a year of learning into focus 🙌💪
Over spring break, ten students and three faculty chaperones traveled to Zambia for Marymount’s inaugural service-learning program in the Zambezi region 🌍✈️ Students spent time at RSHM-affiliated schools in Choma and Chivuna, building meaningful connections with their peers and the RSHM sisters 💙🙏 The group also visited Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 and joined a safari game drive with the Zambezi Elephant Fund 🐘

Upper Mid’s first Badminton Bonanza was a huge success! 🏸 Over the last few weeks, students in PE classes narrowed down a winner for each cohort in advance of today’s final tournament. Once being named a cohort winner, each student selected a faculty or staff member to be their doubles teammate. Today in the Gym with the whole division cheering, teams were eliminated until only one team was left standing! Marymount’s Artist-in-Residence Mark Milroy opens his newest solo exhibition, Jumbo, at JJ Murphy Gallery on Wednesday, April 15! 🖼️🎨 Through portraits, still lifes, and deeply personal narratives, Mr. Milroy transforms the everyday into something poetic and powerfully his own. Prishaa S. ‘26 is reaching new heights in her research journey! ✨After advancing through multiple rounds at the TerraNYC STEM Fair, her work in quantum computing applications earned First Place 🥇 in Mathematical Sciences and a U.S. Air Force award for outstanding work. Prishaa will now advance to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair—the world’s largest pre-college STEM competition—this May in Phoenix, Arizona. Award-winning author and illustrator Sophie Blackall visited Lower School this week to discuss her work and sources of inspiration 📝📚🤩 In addition to reading If We Were Dogs to Nursery/Pre-K, she read Farmhouse to K-II and also led them in an illustration exercise. We will forever remember this special visit because Sophie left us an autographed drawing of Ivy & Bean which will hang in the LS Library!

Out of hundreds of thousands of submissions, fewer than 700 students were recognized, making Lucie one of the top teen writers in the US! 👏🙌💪

Meet Sydney Wilcenski, a new physical education teacher at the Upper Campus! Ms. Wilcenski grew up in New Jersey and moved to Baltimore, Maryland, to attend undergrad at Loyola University Maryland and graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania. She taught elementary general and special education in Maryland before moving to NYC. In her free time, you can find her playing volleyball 🏐 or crafting 🧶 She also loves a good book 📚 and is always open to recommendations! Meet Yoshiko Maruiwa, the new art teacher for Classes K-II! She is originally from Japan 🇯🇵 and moved to the US to pursue her passion for art education. She earned degrees from Sophia University in Tokyo, Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, and Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. With extensive experience teaching art in museums, communities, and schools, Ms. Maruiwa is excited to bring joy, creativity, and expertise to her new role. Outside of teaching, she enjoys weaving and sewing 🪡 traveling ✈️ visiting museums 🖼️ animals 🐶 beaches 🏖️ and, most of all, cooking 🧑🍳 and sharing meals with her family and friends. Ellie Burns joins the #marymountny community teaching Contemporary World History as well as Class X Global History. She was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Georgia and attended Haverford College for undergrad. Ms. Burns majored in history and religion and played varsity soccer ⚽️ before returning to Georgia to teach high school history. She then came to New York for her master’s at Teachers College at Columbia University and loved New York so much she decided to stay! Ms. Burns is excited to become part of both the Upper Mid and Upper School faculty. Seven #marymountny Upper Schoolers joined students from @marymount.cuernavaca and @marymountla for the first RSHM Social Service Week last month in Mexico. They engaged in community service initiatives including supporting kids at a children’s home and at an orphanage, serving breakfast at a local St. Vincent de Paul center, and spending time with retired nuns at an elder care facility. This global initiative allowed our students to truly live out the RSHM mission “that all may have life, and have it to the full.” #careservelead

Three Upper School students, along with their peers from Fieldston, presented their research at the MAGIC Symposium last week 👏 MAGIC (More Active Girls in Computing) pairs each student with a woman in STEM who acts as a mentor as the student works on research projects during her time in the program.

We are thrilled to announce that Ms. Lorraine Riley has been appointed Marymount’s next head of school, effective July 1, 2025! A proud #marymountny alumna and current parent, Ms. Riley has served as both Director of Admissions and Director of Development at Marymount; previously she was the Director of Curriculum and Instruction at KIPP Charter Network in New Orleans.

Last weekend two Lower Mid teams participated in a 3-hour math tournament at Chapin 💪 Their enthusiasm, support of one another, and positive energy helped them work through many math challenges and leave the competition with big smiles!
