Head of School Lorraine Riley ’04 traveled to Washington, DC, this week to visit colleges and meet local alumnae! 🌟 Ms. Riley was thrilled to swap stories with nearly 20 alum at The Tombs - a favorite haunt from her Georgetown days - and visit with Cynthia ’72, who made history as the first #marymountny graduate to attend Georgetown University. 💙🎓 #mmtalumnae

Jun Gao was named an Outstanding Educator by the University of Chicago after being nominated by his former student, Hannah Wu ‘25, who matriculated there this fall! This award is presented to high school educators who foster intellectual curiosity, deep engagement with their subjects, and a profound connection with students. In Hannah’s words: “”Dr. Gao, thank you for being the most incredible and informative art teacher I’ve ever had. The Marymount community celebrated Diwali by learning traditional dances, making diyas and rangoli, and getting designs on their hands from henna artists. Wishing joy and light to all who celebrate! ✨🪔

Class XII students in the new Neuroscience elective participated in a sheep 🐑 brain dissection earlier this month to better understand the anatomy of the 🧠 Neuroscience is not the only new science elective this year; Pharmacology will be offered in the spring semester!

Last week Class VII students participated in the first step of the Hudson Data Jam by collecting data from the Hudson River. Students measured the chemistry of the river, conducted experiments to monitor dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrate and phosphate levels, and measured the tides and currents for that day. 👩‍🔬🧪🌊This multi-month scientific exploration will culminate in small group presentations in front of peers and parents and the potential to win recognition in the annual statewide competition!

On Friday, Lower Mid students and their VIP guests enjoyed a fabulous night filled with square dancing, barbecue, and games. A beloved #mmttradition for over seven decades! 🤠🤠

Don’t miss Chloe K. ‘32 in The Metropolitan Opera’s production of Bellini’s La Sonnambula, which runs through November 1! 🎭🎵 Following in the footsteps of her grandmother who was an opera singer, Chloe has performed in five operas including Puccini’s Tosca, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, Puccini’s Turandot, and Verdi’s Aida. The performance this Saturday, October 18, will be broadcast live around the world 🌎 at 1:00 p.m. in over 2200 movie theaters in 70 countries and on the Met HD App. Congratulations to Chloe on such a marvelous achievement! 💙💙

New York public schools went cell-phone free for the first time this year, and Rosalee G. ‘28 is on the Teen Tech Council advising the NY Governor on how to make this policy successful! They recently launched the “IRL is better” campaign that offers tools and tips for parents and educators to make the transition smoother. Congratulations to Rosalee on helping students across the state improve focus on their academics and connection with their peers!

Last Friday, #marymountny faculty and staff visited Tarrytown, where members of the RSHM inspired us with the myriad of ways they are working to ensure that all may have life and have it to the full. Staff then had the chance to explore the history of the RSHM and go to Mass with the sisters. An inspiring day reconnecting with the heart of our community! 🙏✨

Marymount welcomed nearly 200 guests to our annual Latinx Heritage Celebration on Friday in honor of Latinx Heritage Month that is celebrated between 9/15-10/15. This year, the theme of the event was mosaics. Like a mosaic that includes diverse tiles placed together to create a cohesive image, Marymount’s Latinx community helps shape our school’s mission to be a nurturing family that supports the growth, creativity, and leadership of all of our students. 💙💙

Upper School students in the elective Critical Thinking in the Arts saw The Great Gatsby on Broadway last week as part of their unit on non-traditional interpretation of classic works. They compared the original text to both the musical and the Baz Luhrmann film during class discussions, culminating in a written review. 🎭📖

🎭 In ancient Rome, theatrical performances were staged in open-air theaters, where actors wore painted masks with exaggerated features to help the audience recognize different characters. Masks also allowed a single actor to play multiple roles by switching between them. Inspired by this tradition, Class VIII Latin students designed and created their own theater masks to bring Roman performance practices to life. 🎭

Class V went on their first overnight trip last week to the Ashokan Center, where they strengthened relationships and built class unity while exploring the flora and fauna of upstate New York. Students participated in team-building challenges and fun activities like archery 🏹 hiking 🥾 and tinsmithing.

Meet Sydney Wilcenski, a new physical education teacher at the Upper Campus! Ms. Wilcenski grew up in New Jersey and moved to Baltimore, Maryland, to attend undergrad at Loyola University Maryland and graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania. She taught elementary general and special education in Maryland before moving to NYC. In her free time, you can find her playing volleyball 🏐 or crafting 🧶 She also loves a good book 📚 and is always open to recommendations! Meet Yoshiko Maruiwa, the new art teacher for Classes K-II! She is originally from Japan 🇯🇵 and moved to the US to pursue her passion for art education. She earned degrees from Sophia University in Tokyo, Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, and Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. With extensive experience teaching art in museums, communities, and schools, Ms. Maruiwa is excited to bring joy, creativity, and expertise to her new role. Outside of teaching, she enjoys weaving and sewing 🪡 traveling ✈️ visiting museums 🖼️ animals 🐶 beaches 🏖️ and, most of all, cooking 🧑‍🍳 and sharing meals with her family and friends. Ellie Burns joins the #marymountny community teaching Contemporary World History as well as Class X Global History. She was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Georgia and attended Haverford College for undergrad. Ms. Burns majored in history and religion and played varsity soccer ⚽️ before returning to Georgia to teach high school history. She then came to New York for her master’s at Teachers College at Columbia University and loved New York so much she decided to stay! Ms. Burns is excited to become part of both the Upper Mid and Upper School faculty. Seven #marymountny Upper Schoolers joined students from @marymount.cuernavaca and @marymountla for the first RSHM Social Service Week last month in Mexico. They engaged in community service initiatives including supporting kids at a children’s home and at an orphanage, serving breakfast at a local St. Vincent de Paul center, and spending time with retired nuns at an elder care facility. This global initiative allowed our students to truly live out the RSHM mission “that all may have life, and have it to the full.” #careservelead

Eight Upper School student-athletes traveled to Medellin over break to participate in a sports festival with other RSHM schools. Rose and Skyler will also be competing at the end of March at the esteemed Eastern Zones Championships, one of four swimming zones in USA. Go girls! 🏊‍♂️💪👏

What a joy it was to watch Class VII students don Elizabethan garb and recite the words of Shakespeare in their fabulous productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream last week! 🎭

We love to see our @mmtalumnae continue their lifelong love of learning with a master class in financial literacy! Taught by beloved Upper School teacher Dr. Cornelis, all alum taking this class will receive a Bloomberg Market Concepts certification upon completion of the course. 📈💪👏
