Ali Slavin joins Marymount as an Upper Middle School Learning Specialist, working with students in Classes VI-VIII. She comes to Marymount from Winston Preparatory School, where she spent twelve years supporting students with language-based learning differences and executive functioning profiles as a Focus Teacher, Testing Coordinator, and College Board SSD Coordinator. Ms. Slavin holds an M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Teachers College, Columbia University, and she is a licensed speech-language pathologist. Outside of school, she is a new-ish mom to her one-year-old daughter, Sloane, and she enjoys taking Pilates, reading 📚 and needlepointing 🪡 Ms. Slavin is looking forward to getting to know the Upper Middle School students and their families as they grow into their potential this year. Meet Katie Dunphy, a new associate teacher in Kindergarten-A! Originally from Manhasset, New York, Ms. Dunphy recently graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She gained experience in grades PK-V during her undergraduate career and is thrilled to join Marymount’s Lower School community. Meet Amanda Volk, a new associate teacher in Class IB. Originally from Long Island, Ms. Volk earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Lehigh University and is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Education in Childhood Education at Hunter College. Before coming to Marymount, she spent five summers at Camp Echo Lake, where she served as a Camper Specialist, Group Leader, and Head Counselor, working with children ages 10–16, where she found joy in helping children build confidence, friendships, and lifelong memories. Meet Serena Strecker Rolock, a new history teacher in the Upper School, where she will be teaching Classes X-XI. Originally from Missouri, Dr. Strecker Rolock completed her bachelor‘s in Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities at the University of Chicago and her Ph.D. in History at Yale University. While at Yale, she discovered a love for teaching students how to think like historians. She has taught subjects ranging from the Catholic intellectual tradition to food history and the history of climate science. In her free time, you can find her watching Star Trek or enjoying tea at Té Company. Dr. Strecker Rolock is delighted to be joining the Marymount community. A warm welcome to Dr. Strecker Rolock! 💙💙

Meet Cate Pfau, a new associate teacher in Kindergarten-B! Originally from Madison, Wisconsin, Ms. Pfau graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 2025 with degrees in Political Science and Peace and Conflict Studies, and a minor in Education. This past year, she taught high school English in a rural town in the Czech Republic 🇨🇿 through the Fulbright Program. She loves creating meaningful classroom experiences and is excited to continue teaching at Marymount! In her free time, she enjoys spending time outside 🌳 exploring new places ✈️ and being with her friends and family. A warm welcome to Ms. Pfau! 💙💙

Meet Sophia Ramos, a new Spanish teacher in the Lower Middle School. Originally from Puerto Rico, Ms. Ramos recently moved to New York after several years living and teaching in Colombia 🇨🇴 She has been teaching since 2018 and has experience working with students of all ages in both English and Spanish language classrooms. She loves traveling ✈️ learning about different cultures, and spending time with her dog, Matcha 🐶. We are kicking off our new staff spotlights with Phil Cook, the new Upper School Science Department Chair! Before joining the #marymountny community, Mr. Cook served as an Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow with the U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C., where he partnered with scientists and educators to develop hands-on science experiences for classrooms across the country 🥼🧪 A chemistry teacher at heart, he is passionate about helping students build confidence by asking thoughtful questions, designing investigations, collaborating with others, and discovering how the world around them works. His passion for curiosity extends beyond the classroom through educational videos 🎥that he writes and produces that reveal the surprising science hidden in everyday objects, historical inventions, and the world around us. This June, students in rising Classes IX-XI spent a week immersed in the art, history, and culture of France 🇫🇷 exploring Paris, Arles, and Avignon as centers of creative inspiration. Following in the footsteps of renowned artists, they visited world-class museums 🖼️ admired the newly restored Notre-Dame Cathedral ✝️ wandered the historic streets of Arles, and experienced some of France’s most iconic landmarks. Throughout the journey, students engaged in thoughtful discussions about the ways art and culture reflect society and continue to shape our understanding of the world.

Meet Victoria Mussalli ‘14, Marymount’s new Director of Alumnae Affairs and Development Operations! She’s thrilled to rejoin the Marymount community on the Development team and is looking forward to connecting with alumnae and current families in the months ahead. Prior to Marymount, Victoria worked in private equity for 8 years, building operations across cybersecurity, compliance, and HR functions. On the final day of school, grants were awarded to 3 local nonprofit organizations that Class X students researched and advocated for in our annual MPACT program. Congratulations to Rosalee, Ava G., Kay Rose, and Allyson on winning $5000 for Hidden Water which supports victims of child abuse; Airlie, Victoria, and Ava Y. on winning $2500 for RaisingHealth Partners which supports local immigrant communities; and Isabella, Evelyn, Ruby, and Lucy on winning $1500 for American Indian Community House which supports Indigenous youth’s access in NYC 👏💙👏 Proud of all our Class X students for striving for social justice and putting faith into action!

Working in teams, Class V students designed their own products, developed sales pitches, and brought their entrepreneurial ideas to life at the recent Lion’s Den! After hearing from a panel of business leaders and entrepreneurs, students pitched their products to these potential “investors” and sold them to eager Class IV shoppers armed with 5 “Begly bucks.” An impressive display of imagination and innovation from our young entrepreneurs! 👏🦁💪

Meet Sydney Wilcenski, a new physical education teacher at the Upper Campus! Ms. Wilcenski grew up in New Jersey and moved to Baltimore, Maryland, to attend undergrad at Loyola University Maryland and graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania. She taught elementary general and special education in Maryland before moving to NYC. In her free time, you can find her playing volleyball 🏐 or crafting 🧶 She also loves a good book 📚 and is always open to recommendations! Ms. Wilcenski is elated to be joining the #marymountny team and can’t wait to work with all of the kids! A warm welcome to Ms. Wilcenski! 💙🦁💙

Meet Yoshiko Maruiwa, the new art teacher for Classes K-II! She is originally from Japan 🇯🇵 and moved to the US to pursue her passion for art education. She earned degrees from Sophia University in Tokyo, Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, and Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. With extensive experience teaching art in museums, communities, and schools, Ms. Maruiwa is excited to bring joy, creativity, and expertise to her new role. Outside of teaching, she enjoys weaving and sewing 🪡 traveling ✈️ visiting museums 🖼️ animals 🐶 beaches 🏖️ and, most of all, cooking 🧑‍🍳 and sharing meals with her family and friends. Ellie Burns joins the #marymountny community teaching Contemporary World History as well as Class X Global History. She was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Georgia and attended Haverford College for undergrad. Ms. Burns majored in history and religion and played varsity soccer ⚽️ before returning to Georgia to teach high school history. She then came to New York for her master’s at Teachers College at Columbia University and loved New York so much she decided to stay! Ms. Burns is excited to become part of both the Upper Mid and Upper School faculty. In her free time, you can find Ms. Burns running 🏃‍♀️ through New York, reading 📖 in Central Park, or trying a new coffee ☕️ shop. A warm welcome to Ms. Burns! 💙🦁💙

Mrs. Frommert brings 24 years of experience teaching secondary math in both international schools and an all-girls Catholic school in Houston. Her love for educational collaboration and leadership extends beyond the classroom, serving as an administrator and as a published author in education. In August, Mrs. Frommert moved to NYC with her husband, daughter, and their beloved Sheltie dog. As a new Marymount parent, she appreciates the warm welcome from the #marymountny community. Seven #marymountny Upper Schoolers joined students from @marymount.cuernavaca and @marymountla for the first RSHM Social Service Week last month in Mexico. They engaged in community service initiatives including supporting kids at a children’s home and at an orphanage, serving breakfast at a local St. Vincent de Paul center, and spending time with retired nuns at an elder care facility. This global initiative allowed our students to truly live out the RSHM mission “that all may have life, and have it to the full.” #careservelead

This year #marymountny became one of the first schools to offer the Atherton Award in recognition of entrepreneurial spirit in young women 🏆 Brianna F. ‘25 was named the winner for her innovative ideas to streamline services and improve revenue for the MTA! Olivia W. ‘26 and Marcella C-R. ‘26 were also recognized as finalists for the award. All three will receive grants and mentorship as they develop their ideas further. Class VII capped off their study of 🇺🇸 history this year with a trip to Boston last week! They explored colonial life and the American Revolution at sites including Plimoth Plantation, the Boston Tea Party Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts. ❤️🤍💙

The Upper School Campus Ministry team hosted the beloved Coinival yesterday for Class II students! This philanthropic tradition features a ton of fun activities and games designed to raise money to support the RSHM’s humanitarian work in the Zambezi region of Africa. #careservelead 💙💙

11 #marymountny students traveled to Cuernavaca last week to attend the first Marymount Model UN global conference! 🌎All of our students performed well in their committees, with Ruby M. ‘24, Katie d.W. ‘24, and Hannah Y. ‘25 winning best delegate, Silvana J. ‘26 winning outstanding delegate, and Estella S. ‘25 winning honorable delegate. Class VI transported audiences to the Middle Ages at their recent Medieval Festival, a cross-curricular collaboration of the English, history, and the performing arts departments. 🏰👑🏹

Today Class XII attended a mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral that that the Archdiocese hosts for graduating seniors in celebration of their many accomplishments and in blessing of their bright futures! 🎓🙏

Lower School was delighted to welcome author and illustrator @studioroxas yesterday! She helped Kindergarten draw her Rhino character from her book Let Me Finish! Classes I-II worked on mini zines, similar to the zine she made that ended up sparking her Team Pom series. An inspiring day for our budding authors! 📚📖

Eight Upper School student-athletes traveled to Medellin over break to participate in a sports festival with other RSHM schools. Congratulations to Rose S. ‘30 (🥉 in 200IM) and Skyler M. ‘30 (🥉 in 100Fly, 🥉 in 200Free relay, 🥈 in 400Free relay) for their amazing performances at the 2024 MR Short Course Junior Mets Championship last weekend! Rose and Skyler will also be competing at the end of March at the esteemed Eastern Zones Championships, one of four swimming zones in USA. Go girls! 🏊‍♂️💪👏

What a joy it was to watch Class VII students don Elizabethan garb and recite the words of Shakespeare in their fabulous productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream last week! 🎭

We love to see our @mmtalumnae continue their lifelong love of learning with a master class in financial literacy! Taught by beloved Upper School teacher Dr. Cornelis, all alum taking this class will receive a Bloomberg Market Concepts certification upon completion of the course. 📈💪👏
